Tim, a young mockingbird, was recently rescued by the California Wildlife Center after being found with malformed feet. Born with a condition that caused his feet to knuckle and fold inward, Tim struggled to walk or climb, essential skills for a bird’s survival. His deformity also made it difficult for him to perch on branches, which could lead to sores and further complications. Tim would have had little chance of survival if left in the wild.

The veterinarians were determined to find a solution allowing Tim to live a healthier and more comfortable life. They devised an ingenious plan to create a custom solution for Tim’s knuckled feet: a tiny pair of shoes made from cardboard.
The shoes were designed to help realign Tim’s feet and guide them back to a more natural position. These handmade shoes functioned like miniature orthopedic devices, encouraging his feet to regain the correct shape for walking, climbing, and perching.
Tim’s feet had fully healed after just one week of wearing his little cardboard shoes. The veterinarians were amazed by his progress. Tim was now able to move about freely without pain or difficulty. With his newfound mobility and health, the little mockingbird had a much brighter future ahead of him.
