A Virginia family had a surprising holiday guest when a wild barred owl flew down their chimney a week before Christmas. The Animal Welfare League of Arlington reported that the owl came down the chimney and immediately perched on the familyโs Christmas tree, causing the star to fall off.
In a video shared by the Animal Welfare League, the owl is flying around the house, much to the amusement of two young children, whose laughter fills the clip. The owl briefly explores the kitchen before returning to the Christmas tree. One of the children joyfully exclaims, โAnd back on the tree.โ
Eventually, Sergeant Murray from the Animal Welfare League safely captured the owl and escorted it outside. After being released, the owl flew off into the night.
The Animal Welfare League advised homeowners to cap their chimneys during the winter. This simple precaution can help prevent wildlife, such as birds, squirrels, and bats, from entering homes. Chimneys often provide a safe refuge for animals seeking shelter from cold weather, and some species even use them as dens for giving birth. Capping chimneys can also stop leaves, snow, and other debris from falling inside.
